Zach Bruce is the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for the Eastern Washington University football program, entering his sixth season coaching safeties in 2025. A former standout Eagle, Bruce has developed into a key defensive leader, guiding the secondary and helping produce multiple All-Big Sky performers. Under his leadership, players such as Derek Ganter Jr., Marlon Jones Jr., Calin Criner, and Anthany Smith have earned conference recognition, while the Eagles have consistently ranked among the top teams in the Big Sky in interceptions and pass defense. His coaching emphasizes discipline, awareness, and playmaking ability in the secondary.
Before returning to Eastern Washington, Bruce gained experience at both the high school and international levels, including coaching defensive backs and strength and conditioning in Finland, as well as serving at Mead High School in Washington. As a player for the Eagles from 2012 to 2016, he was a team captain and First Team All-Big Sky selection, finishing his career among the program’s leaders in tackles and games played. He also earned multiple academic honors, reflecting his commitment both on and off the field. A graduate of Eastern Washington with a degree in history, Bruce brings a deep understanding of the program’s culture and a player-first approach to his role as a coach.
