Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator

Ty Margenthaler was named Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the UAB women’s basketball program on April 9, 2025, bringing more than 20 years of coaching experience to Birmingham. His résumé includes four seasons as a head coach and multiple stops at the Division I level. Most recently, Margenthaler served as an assistant at North Alabama, where he helped mentor an All-ASUN Third Team selection along with multiple weekly award recipients. Prior to that, he spent the 2023-24 season at Pittsburgh as assistant coach and defensive coordinator, guiding Liatu King to All-ACC First Team honors and ACC Most Improved Player recognition. At South Dakota in 2022-23, he helped develop Grace Larkins into a First Team All-Summit League performer with a historically well-rounded statistical season. Margenthaler previously spent six seasons at Saint Louis, including four as associate head coach, contributing to three WNIT appearances and an Elite Eight run in 2021. He also worked under Lisa Stone at Wisconsin, helping the Badgers to a WNIT runner-up finish and a 2010 NCAA Tournament appearance. From 2011-15, he served as head coach at Southeast Missouri State, leading a program turnaround and offensive improvement. A former standout player at SIUE, Margenthaler earned his degree in physical education/kinesiology in 1997. He and his wife, Julie, have two sons, Brice and Nate.
