Tyler Hanson
Assistant Coach, Catchers/Scouting & Assistant Recruiting Coordinator
Tyler Hanson is in his seventh season with the Virginia Tech baseball program, where he serves as assistant coach, overseeing catchers, scouting, and assisting in recruiting coordination. Since joining the Hokies in 2018, Hanson has been instrumental in developing both elite catching talent and one of the nation’s most potent offenses. Promoted to his current role in 2022, he helped guide the “Hammerin’ Hokies” to historic success, including the 2022 ACC Coastal Division title and an NCAA Super Regional berth.
From 2022 to 2024, Hanson’s offensive units ranked among the top five nationally in home runs (322 total, 1.94 per game) and fifth in scoring average (8.65 runs per game), while consistently placing inside the top 15 in batting average and slugging percentage. Under his guidance, Virginia Tech produced Buster Posey Award watch-list catchers Carson Taylor (2020) and Cade Hunter (2022), both of whom went on to become early MLB Draft selections — Taylor in the fourth round (Los Angeles Dodgers, 2020) and Hunter in the fifth round (Cincinnati Reds, 2022).
Prior to joining the Hokies, Hanson served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Kentucky (2016–18), where he mentored All-Americans Ben Fisher, Daniel Harris IV, and Alex Holderbach — the latter becoming a Johnny Bench Award finalist and Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist. He also spent time coaching at North Carolina Central (2012–15) and Duke (2011). Across his career, Hanson has coached 19 players selected in the MLB Draft, including 12 during his tenure at Virginia Tech.
A native of Maine, Hanson graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in business economics. A four-year starter and two-time captain at catcher, he was twice named to the North Atlantic All-Conference Team and ranks among the program’s top 10 in career home runs.
