Troy Rothenbuhler is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Robert Morris football in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. He joined the program in March 2025 after serving five seasons in the same role at Youngstown State. A veteran coach with experience across the FCS, Division II, Division III, the FBS, and the NFL, Rothenbuhler brought a long record of productive offenses and quarterback development to Robert Morris. At Youngstown State, Rothenbuhler led an offense that helped the Penguins reach the second round of the FCS Championship. In 2023, Youngstown State averaged a school-record 243.1 passing yards per game, breaking a mark that had stood since 1972. That offense also set school records for completions with 270, attempts with 388, and completion percentage at 69.6. Over his time there, he coached more than 15 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Conference players, including the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year and the 2021 Freshman of the Year. Before Youngstown State, he spent the 2019 season at Eastern Kentucky as tight ends coach, helping the Colonels go 7-5 while leading the conference and ranking 20th nationally in rushing offense. In 2018, he worked in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals as a quality control coach assisting the quarterbacks. Rothenbuhler also produced strong offenses in several earlier college stops. From 2011 to 2017, he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Findlay, where the 2017 team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in program history.
That season, Findlay was the only NCAA team to average more than 250 yards both rushing and passing per game, finishing 10-3 while ranking sixth nationally in scoring, third in total offense, third in third-down conversion percentage, and fifth in time of possession. Before that, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio Northern in 2009 and 2010, helping the Polar Bears reach the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2010 with a 10-2 record. Those Ohio Northern teams averaged more than 32 points per game in each season and combined strong rushing and passing production. From 2003 to 2008, Rothenbuhler held multiple roles at Bowling Green, including assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and position coach for wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive ends. During that stretch, the Falcons reached three bowl games. The 2003 team went 11-3, won the MAC West, and finished ranked in both major polls after a Motor City Bowl win over Northwestern. Bowling Green also won the 2004 GMAC Bowl and returned to that game after the 2007 season. Earlier, he spent 2002 as offensive coordinator at Heidelberg and worked at Arkansas State from 1997 to 2001 coaching tight ends and wide receivers. He began his coaching career at Ohio State, first as a student assistant working with wide receivers and then as a graduate assistant working with quarterbacks and tight ends. During his time with the Buckeyes, the program appeared in five bowl games, including the Rose Bowl. Rothenbuhler graduated from Ohio State in 1995 with a degree in mathematical sciences and he and his wife, Amy, have two children, Maddy and Jake.
