Tristan Johnson was named head women’s volleyball coach at the University of North Alabama on December 20, 2021, and enters his fourth season leading the Lions in 2025. Johnson brought more than a decade of Division I coaching experience to Florence, with previous stops at Alabama, Arkansas State, and Southern Illinois. In his first season at UNA in 2022, he guided the Lions to a 13-15 record, followed by a Division I program-record 17 wins in 2023. The 2024 campaign featured 15 victories, highlighted by a 3-0 sweep of Alabama—his alma mater—marking a signature win for the program. Recognized nationally for his coaching potential, Johnson was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association “Thirty Under 30” list in 2015 and to VolleyballMag.com’s Under 40 Coaching Hotshots in 2020.
Prior to UNA, Johnson served as an assistant and associate head coach at Arkansas State, helping the Red Wolves compile a 74-20 record over three seasons, including a perfect 16-0 Sun Belt Conference campaign in 2015 and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He also contributed to successful stints at Alabama and Southern Illinois, where teams achieved notable improvements and postseason success. Johnson began his career as a student assistant at Blinn College, where he was part of a 38-0 NJCAA national championship team in 2011. A 2014 Alabama graduate, he has also interned with the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams. Volleyball runs in his family, as his mother, Denise Johnson, is a Hall of Fame high school coach in Texas.
