Sumner Ellis serves as Associate Head Coach
(Defensive Line) for Mercer University's Football program in Macon, Georgia.
A 15-year coaching veteran with a trio of stops on the collegiate level, including one in Macon, Sumner Ellis begins his fourth season at Mercer in 2026-27, as well as his sixth year alongside head coach Joel Taylor, as the defensive line coach for the Bears. Ellis, who was originally a part of the MU coaching staff from 2020-23, spent the previous two seasons in the same role at West Georgia. West Georgia yielded just 131.2 rushing yards per game across the 2024 and 2025 campaigns with Ellis on the sidelines, while also amassing 6.9 tackles for loss (2.7 sacks/game) across that 22-game span as well.
