Steve Totten
Associate Head Coach
Steve Totten has been a cornerstone of Princeton University men’s soccer since joining the program in 2008 and enters his 18th season with the Tigers in 2025. Elevated to associate head coach prior to the 2017 season, Totten has played a central role in one of the most successful stretches in program history. Since his arrival, Princeton has captured four Ivy League championships, including two perfect 7–0–0 league seasons, earned five NCAA Tournament appearances, and won the Ivy League Tournament title in 2024. Remarkably, every graduating class during Totten’s tenure has won at least one Ivy League championship, underscoring the program’s sustained excellence and consistency.
Totten has been instrumental in player development, helping guide nine players who were drafted or signed by Major League Soccer clubs and contributing to teams that frequently led the Ivy League in scoring. In 2018, he was part of the Princeton staff named NCAA Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year following an Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament appearance, and he was selected as one of just eight college coaches nationwide to work the MLS Combine. His influence extends beyond tactics and recruiting, as Princeton players have also been recognized for leadership and sportsmanship, earning multiple Spirit of Princeton awards during his tenure.
Before Princeton, Totten coached at American University and served as a successful high school and youth coach in the Washington, D.C. area. A native of Allentown, New Jersey, he was a standout midfielder at the University of Virginia, where he was a three-time team captain, two-time team MVP, and an MLS SuperDraft selection by the Chicago Fire. His background as an elite player and experienced coach continues to shape Princeton men’s soccer at the Ivy League and national level.
