Steve Steketee
Associate Head Coach
Steve Steketee joined the Virginia Tech swimming & diving staff as an assistant in July 2018, later rising to the role of associate head coach. He had previously worked alongside head coach Sergio López Miró during their tenure at West Virginia (2004–2007), where together they helped elevate both men's and women's squads—improving the women from 11th to 3rd in the Big East and taking the men’s team into the top-20 nationally. Prior to arriving in Blacksburg, Steketee served as a volunteer assistant at Northwestern, working with the women’s swimming and diving program and coaching athletes such as 2016 Olympian Valerie Gruest and NCAA champion diver Olivia Rosendahl.
He also held assistant coaching roles at Nevada—helping the Wolfpack to their highest-ever finish at the Mountain West Championships—and at South Carolina, where he coached swimmers who competed in U.S. National Championships, the 2008 Olympic Trials, and the 2009 World Championships. As a competitive swimmer, Steketee was a Big Ten Champion in the 200 yard freestyle at Northwestern and competed in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing among the top-20 in that event. While at Northwestern, he held program records in the 50, 100, and 200 free events and across multiple relays. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy from Northwestern in 2001. He is married to Abby Steketee (née Meadema), who has been affiliated with swimming coaching as well.
