Steve Pikiell
Head Coach
Steve Pikiell is a highly respected American college basketball coach serving as the head coach of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick men’s basketball team. Entering his 10th season in 2025–26, Pikiell has been instrumental in revitalizing the Scarlet Knights program, guiding Rutgers back to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 for the first time since 1991 and again in 2022, marking the team’s first consecutive tournament appearances in decades. Under his leadership, Rutgers has achieved its highest number of ranked wins in school history, and Pikiell’s 147 wins as head coach place him among the program’s all-time leaders. Known for his ability to recruit and develop talent, he brought in the highest-ranked recruiting class in school history for 2025, including Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, who became the program’s highest NBA draft picks. Before Rutgers, Pikiell built a strong coaching legacy at Stony Brook University, leading the Seawolves to multiple postseason appearances and America East Conference titles.
A native of Bristol, Connecticut, Pikiell played collegiate basketball at the University of Connecticut, where he was a four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain. His playing experience under legendary coach Jim Calhoun shaped his coaching philosophy, emphasizing defense, discipline, and player development. Over a coaching career spanning more than three decades, Pikiell has become known for transforming programs and fostering competitive teams. Beyond basketball, he and his wife Kate are parents to four children, highlighting his commitment to family alongside his professional achievements. Pikiell’s leadership has not only elevated Rutgers on the court but also helped strengthen its culture and community presence.
