Steve Owens is an accomplished collegiate baseball coach and the head coach of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Scarlet Knights baseball program, entering his seventh year at the helm in 2026. A native of Sauquoit, New York, Owens has built one of the most successful coaching careers in Division I baseball, ranking among the top active coaches nationally in wins and winning percentage. Before arriving at Rutgers, Owens earned 32 winning seasons as a head coach and guided his teams to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. On April 4, 2023, he recorded his 1,000th career victory, becoming just the ninth active Division I coach to reach that milestone at the time. Known for mentoring standout talent, Owens has coached 27 All-Americans and 57 professional players over his career. At Rutgers, he has revitalized the program, leading it to multiple winning seasons and establishing new standards of success both on the field and in program culture.
Under Owens’ leadership, Rutgers baseball has achieved several historic accomplishments. Between 2022 and 2024, the Scarlet Knights compiled 105 wins — the most in any three-year span since the early 2000s — including back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 2004–05. Owens has emphasized toughness, player development, and competitive scheduling, resulting in strong conference play, postseason appearances, and the development of professional prospects. His commitment to excellence has changed the perception of Rutgers baseball in the Big Ten and nationally, as the program continues to grow in competitiveness and prominence. Owens’ extensive experience and demonstrated success have made him a respected leader in college baseball and a driving force behind the Scarlet Knights’ sustained progress.
