Sergio Lopez Miro
Head Coach
Sergio López Miró is a decorated and internationally renowned swimming coach and former elite athlete who has led the Virginia Tech swimming & diving program since his hiring in May 2018. Born in Barcelona, Spain, López Miró competed for Spain from 1984 to 1996, earning a bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and setting multiple national and European records. As a collegiate swimmer, he represented Indiana University and American University, earning nine All-American honors and leaving a lasting mark on those programs.
Transitioning into coaching in the mid-1990s, he held roles at multiple levels, including volunteer assistant at Arizona, technical director in Spain, and assistant coach at Northwestern. Later, he served as head coach at West Virginia (2004–07), where he was a two-time Big East Men’s Coach of the Year, and then led the Bolles School program in Florida from 2007 to 2014. At Bolles he coached swimmers who went on to Olympic and NCAA success, such as Ryan Murphy and Joseph Schooling.
He also led Singapore’s National Training Center as head high performance coach and later served as associate head coach at Auburn. Under López Miró’s leadership, the Hokies have risen rapidly in national prominence. The men’s team recorded its highest-ever NCAA finish in 2023 (9th place) and have repeatedly broken school records and produced All-American athletes. He has also emphasized academic excellence—both the men’s and women’s squads have been named CSCAA Scholar All-American teams, and dozens of swimmers have earned All-ACC Academic honors. In 2023, his contract was extended through 2028, demonstrating the university’s confidence in his continued leadership.
