Scott Armstrong
Head Men's and Women's Swimming Coach
Scott Armstrong, a 2003 Johns Hopkins alumnus, returned to lead his alma mater’s swimming programs in May 2016, becoming just the fourth head coach in the program’s history. Already a distinguished competitor as a student — earning All-America honors 18 times and serving as team captain — Armstrong brought deep institutional knowledge and competitive spirit to his coaching role. Since taking over, he has guided the men’s team to multiple top-four finishes at NCAA Division III Championships, including a runner-up finish in 2022. His mentorship has helped produce several national champions and dozens of All-Americans, and his student-athletes have also excelled academically, earning CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America and Postgraduate Scholar honors.
On the women’s side, Armstrong has led the Blue Jay women to multiple top-10 NCAA finishes, including a fifth-place result in 2018. His coaching extends beyond Hopkins: prior to 2016, he served as an assistant coach at Stanford (2012–2016), worked for USA Swimming (2007–2011), and was involved in elite club coaching (NBAC). Off the pool deck, Armstrong is known for his holistic approach to athlete development — combining rigorous training, academic support, and mentorship in leadership.
