Ryan Whalen
Assistant Coach
Ryan Whalen enters the 2025-26 season in his fourth year as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University and his second stint with the Pirates. He previously served in multiple roles at Seton Hall from 2010-16 under Kevin Willard, including video coordinator, director of player development, coordinator of basketball operations, and Director of Basketball Operations during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. During that stretch, the Pirates captured the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament championship. Whalen has worked closely with head coach Shaheen Holloway for more than a decade, including six seasons together during Holloway’s first tenure on staff at Seton Hall and additional years at Saint Peter’s.
Whalen was instrumental in Saint Peter’s historic rise, helping guide the Peacocks to three consecutive seasons with 10-plus MAAC wins (2019-22), the 2022 MAAC Tournament title, and a landmark run to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2022. Before returning to Seton Hall, he held assistant coaching roles at Eastern Kentucky and gained administrative experience at Towson and Iona. A 2008 graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, Whalen began his coaching career as a student assistant under Phil Martelli. A West Long Branch, New Jersey native and Shore Regional High School graduate, Whalen brings a broad basketball background that includes work with the Hoop Group and the Philadelphia 76ers. He and his wife, Amy, have three children.
