Ryan Freeburg
Associate Head Coach
Ryan Freeburg joined the UAB volleyball staff in August 2020 and enters his sixth season as Associate Head Coach in 2025. During his tenure in Birmingham, he has helped guide the Blazers to multiple double-digit win seasons, including a 12-win campaign in 2022, and has played a key role in the development of eight All-Conference performers across Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference. His responsibilities include oversight of defensive systems, blocking schemes, and serve-receive strategy, contributing to the program’s steady competitive growth.
Prior to UAB, Freeburg spent the 2019 season at Samford, helping the Bulldogs secure Southern Conference regular season and tournament championships along with an NCAA Tournament berth. He previously served five seasons on staff at Alabama, including a stint as interim head coach at the end of the 2018 season. Earlier coaching stops include Dayton, where his defense ranked third nationally in blocks per set, and George Washington. A 2010 graduate of Purdue University, Freeburg began his coaching career with the Boilermakers and has also founded and worked with prominent club volleyball programs. His extensive Division I experience strengthens UAB’s coaching staff and player development efforts.
