At Laney, he brings decades of experience directing collegiate women’s basketball programs and is known for building culture and performance from the ground up. At the time of his hiring, Laney’s athletics department noted that he enters after a highly successful 10-year tenure at Diablo Valley College, where he posted a career record of 207-92 (.692) and led his team to the 2018-19 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women’s Basketball State Championship, going 32-1 that season.
Before his time at Diablo Valley, Vaughn served for nearly three years as Assistant Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Hawaii Pacific University, where he contributed to the transformation of a team that had gone 2-25 into a conference championship team within three seasons. As a player, he prepped at George Washington High School in San Francisco, earned a scholarship to Washington State University before transferring to San Francisco City College (helping that team to the CCCAA Final Four), and then played collegiately at Hawaii Pacific University. Vaughn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice and a Master’s degree in Communication from Hawaii Pacific, and a Master’s in Exercise Science from New Mexico Highlands University. His coaching resume also includes high-level training assignments: he has worked with NBA superstar Stephen Curry’s off-season skill training team and assisted workouts of stars such as Luka Dončić and Trae Young. At Laney, Vaughn is expected to lead the program with a focus both on athletic success and student-athlete development within the community of Oakland.
