Assistant Coach
Preston Murphy is an assistant coach for the University of Alabama men’s basketball program, joining the Crimson Tide staff in July 2023. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, Murphy quickly made an impact in Tuscaloosa, helping Alabama reach its first-ever NCAA Final Four in 2024 during his first season on staff. His primary responsibilities include on-court instruction, player development, recruiting, and opponent scouting. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters, Murphy has played a key role in assembling back-to-back top-five recruiting classes, including the highest-ranked signing class in program history in 2024. His efforts have contributed to Alabama’s record-setting offensive production and consecutive Elite Eight appearances.
Prior to Alabama, Murphy built a strong reputation through coaching stints at Creighton, Rhode Island, and Boston College. At Creighton, he helped guide the Bluejays to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and numerous all-conference and NBA-caliber players. During his time at Rhode Island, including a promotion to associate head coach, he was instrumental in securing the highest-ranked recruiting class in school history and developing all-conference talent. Murphy also served as director of operations and assistant coach at Boston College. As a player, he starred at Rhode Island, scoring 1,218 career points and helping lead the Rams to an Elite Eight appearance in 1998. Murphy and his wife, Maria, are proud parents of four children: Preston Jr., Payton, Chase, and Aria.
