Philip Montgomery
Interim Head Coach
Philip Montgomery is a veteran football coach now serving as the interim head coach at Virginia Tech, a position he assumed in 2025 following the dismissal of Brent Pry. His coaching career spans more than three decades, with experience that includes serving as the head coach at Tulsa (2015–2022), offensive coordinator roles at Baylor, Auburn, and Houston, and a co-offensive coordinator position with the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL.
At Tulsa, he led the program to multiple bowl appearances and achieved a historic offensive balance in 2016—becoming the first FBS team to feature a 3,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard rushers, and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season. Montgomery played college football at Tarleton State (1991–1994) as quarterback and safety. He is known for his innovative offensive schemes and track record of developing high-performing quarterbacks (including Robert Griffin III, Bryce Petty, Case Keenum). Montgomery has a reputation for quickly adapting offenses to maximize player strengths, and his elevation to interim head coach at Virginia Tech marks a new chapter in a long and distinguished career.
