Patrick McSorley
Associate Head Coach
Patrick McSorley is a seasoned collegiate men’s soccer coach who has built a reputation for player development, program-building, and consistent postseason success. A native of Springfield, Virginia, he starred at James Madison University (JMU) as a midfielder, becoming a third-team All-American in 1995 and setting JMU career records with 42 goals and 103 points. His playing tenure included appearances in four NCAA Tournaments and three conference championships. After graduating with a bachelor’s in business management (1996) and later a master’s in sports recreation and leadership (2007), McSorley played professionally for several years in the USL, including stints with the Roanoke Wrath.
McSorley transitioned to coaching early, beginning as an assistant and then associate head coach at VMI, before returning to JMU for six seasons. In 2008, he joined the Virginia Tech men’s soccer staff under head coach Mike Brizendine, becoming associate head coach and helping guide the Hokies to a stretch of six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight run in 2016. During his tenure at Tech, he has been instrumental in the recruitment and development of MLS draftees such as Daniel Pereira (a No. 1 overall pick), Ben Lundgaard, and Kristo Strickler. He also earned recognition in 2021 as one of the top 12 “difference maker” assistant coaches by College Soccer News. As of 2025, he embarks on a new chapter at Queens University of Charlotte, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience to the program.
