Before taking the reins at Colorado Mesa, Kochevar served a series of significant defensive-coaching roles. He began his coaching career at Colorado Mesa (2007-11) working with defensive backs and special teams, later moving on to serve as a defensive graduate assistant at CSU, followed by defensive coordinator roles at Humboldt State University (2014-15), West Texas A&M University (2016-18) and CSU Pueblo (2020-21). In his first years at Colorado Mesa Kochevar has emphasized rebuilding the program’s identity on defense, recruiting regionally, and engaging the Grand Junction community in the program’s revival. In announcing his hiring, the university highlighted his “leadership needed for our football student-athletes on the field, in the classroom and around the community.”
