Mike Young
Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Virginia Tech Hokies (Men’s Basketball)
Mike Young is a well-respected American college basketball coach currently serving as the head men’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech, a position he has held since April 2019. Before arriving in Blacksburg, Young spent 17 seasons as the head coach at Wofford College, where he compiled a 299–244 record and led the Terriers to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and Southern Conference titles. At Virginia Tech he achieved a milestone by guiding the Hokies to their first-ever ACC Tournament championship in 2022. His teams are known for their ability to shoot from beyond the arc, disciplined style of play, and consistent competitiveness in the ACC and nonconference play.
Off the court, Young emphasizes academic success and character development in his players. During his time at both Wofford and Virginia Tech, his student-athletes have earned All-Academic honors and maintained strong team GPAs. He is also actively involved in the broader college basketball community, including service on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Ethics Committee. Young earned his bachelor’s degree from Emory & Henry College in 1986, where he was a four-year letterman in basketball, and began his coaching career as an assistant at Emory & Henry, Radford, and Wofford before eventually ascending to the head coach role.
