Mike Coutts is the head softball coach at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island, a position he assumed in August 2024. He arrived at Rhode Island with more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, including head coaching stops at Maine and Colorado School of Mines, along with earlier work in Maine's baseball program and in the Cape Cod League.
Before taking over at Rhode Island, Coutts spent three seasons as head coach at Division II Colorado School of Mines. His teams improved their win total each year, moving from 16 wins in 2022 to 25 in 2023 and 29 in 2024. The 2024 club posted the program's highest win total in seven years, returned to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, and went 15-1 in true home games. Across his three seasons, Mines compiled a 65-53 record in RMAC play, made two postseason appearances, and produced 13 all-conference postseason honors. In 2024, Sadriena Rodriguez became the program's first all-region selection since 2018. Coutts also oversaw steady defensive improvement, with Mines finishing 2024 at .970 in fielding percentage and tied for first in the conference in that category. His 2023 team also made notable gains, returning to the RMAC tournament, setting a school single-season stolen base record with 86, and cutting its team ERA from 5.41 to 3.60.
