Mike Cavanaugh is the head coach of the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team in Storrs, Connecticut, and the 2024-25 season marks his 12th year leading the program. He was hired in the spring of 2013 and later agreed to a new six-year contract in May 2022. Under his direction, UConn has navigated its move into Hockey East and entered a new phase with the opening of a new on-campus arena.
Cavanaugh has overseen many of the program's notable milestones at the Division I level. UConn posted back-to-back 20-win seasons before a 15-19-2 finish in 2023-24, and in 2022-23 the Huskies climbed to No. 6 in the USCHO.com poll, the highest ranking in school history at the time. That team also reached 20 wins for a second straight season. In 2021-22, UConn finished 20-16-0 and ended the year at No. 19 in the final USCHO.com Top 20, the first time the program closed a season ranked in the national polls. Ryan Tverberg earned CCM/AHCA All-America recognition that year, giving the Huskies All-Americans in consecutive seasons.
