Megan Duffy
Virginia Tech — Head Women’s Basketball Coach (women’s basketball)
Megan Duffy was appointed as the eighth head women’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech on April 3, 2024, taking over the Hokies’ program in Blacksburg, Virginia. Prior to arriving at Virginia Tech, Duffy had built a strong reputation as a program builder and developer, including a five-year tenure as head coach at Marquette, along with earlier head coaching experience at Miami (Ohio). Known for emphasizing player growth, team cohesion, and competitive consistency, she led her teams to postseason appearances in most seasons and posted an overall strong winning percentage. In her first season in Blacksburg, her squad posted 19 wins and achieved nine ACC victories — the most by a first-year Hokies head coach. Under her direction, several players made notable leaps in performance and earned opportunities to play professionally. Her coaching résumé is undergirded by stints as an assistant or associate coach at St. John’s, George Washington, and Michigan, where she contributed to postseason runs and development efforts at each stop.
Before her coaching career, Duffy was a standout basketball player. She played at Notre Dame from 2002 to 2006, where she became one of a select few in school history to record over 1,000 points, 500 assists, and 200 steals. After college, she played in the WNBA (Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty) and overseas, before transitioning into coaching in 2009. Her background as a guard and experience at multiple levels have shaped her coaching philosophy, which balances strategic acumen with mentoring relationships. Off the court, she holds a double major in psychology and computer applications, and is married to Kevin Hoyng.
