Maureen Whitney is the head coach of the Portland State University women’s soccer program, entering her second season in the role in 2025 after nearly a decade with the team. She previously served as an assistant coach, associate head coach, and co-head coach, playing a central role in the program’s development and competitiveness within the Big Sky Conference. In her first season as co-head coach in 2024, Whitney guided the Vikings to a Big Sky Tournament semifinal appearance, highlighting a period of sustained postseason success that includes multiple semifinal runs and consistent conference competitiveness. Known for her ability to develop talent, she has mentored numerous All-Big Sky selections, including first-team honorees and the program’s first-ever Big Sky Freshman of the Year.
Whitney brings a wealth of experience from both coaching and playing at the collegiate and professional levels. Prior to Portland State, she coached at Sacramento State, Fresno State, and the College of the Sequoias, contributing to conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. As a player, Whitney had an accomplished career with the California Storm of the Women’s Premier Soccer League, where she earned MVP honors, multiple all-star selections, and two league championships while serving as a long-time team captain. Her background as a multi-sport collegiate athlete and professional player, combined with her extensive coaching experience, provides a strong foundation for her leadership of the Portland State program.
