Matt Lonergan is the associate head coach for men's and women's cross country at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and enters the 2026-27 season in his ninth year in that position and his 14th season as an assistant coach for track and field.
His coaching record includes work with athletes who reached the sport's highest levels, including two Olympians and four athletes selected to USA World Championship teams. Among them were Marla Runyan, who competed in the 1500 meters at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 5000 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and athletes such as Jenny Crain, Nolan Swanson, and Shadrack Biwott, who earned national team berths in marathon, cross country, and half marathon competition. His athletes have also included a USA Pan American Team selection in Jenny Crain and 10 USA Olympic Trials qualifiers across events including the 1500 meters, 5000 meters, 10,000 meters, marathon, and 3000-meter steeplechase.
