Matt Johnson is San Diego State's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, rejoining head coach Sean Lewis after the two worked together for six seasons between Syracuse and Kent State. Johnson arrived on The Mesa as quarterbacks coach in December 2024 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in January 2025. In his first season leading the offense, SDSU improved from the previous year in scoring, rushing production and total offense, while multiple Aztecs earned all-Mountain West recognition.
Before SDSU, Johnson rose through the Kent State staff from offensive quality control to running backs coach and then offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. His units were known for productive ground games, including top national rushing marks in 2020 and 2021 and a 2022 season in which Marquez Cooper earned first-team all-MAC honors. Johnson also helped develop Kent State quarterback Dustin Crum and contributed to the Golden Flashes' first bowl win in program history during the 2019 Frisco Bowl.
