Matthew Valeriani is the associate head coach for men's cross country and distance at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, where he works with the men's distance runners in track and field and cross country. He is in his eighth season on the staff in 2024-25 and was elevated to his current position in 2024 after seven years as an assistant coach. His responsibilities also include directing the men's program's international recruiting efforts.
Since joining Villanova in 2017-18, Valeriani has been part of a period of sustained national success for the Wildcats, especially in the distance events. The men's cross country team posted four top-20 NCAA Championship finishes in a five-year span, including a 15th-place finish in 2024, the program's best national result in a decade. Villanova also won BIG EAST cross country titles in 2019, 2022 and 2024, along with three NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional crowns during his tenure. On the track, the men's team captured indoor BIG EAST championships in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and won the 2019 outdoor conference title. During his years on staff, the program accumulated 30 All-America honors and 55 individual BIG EAST championships.
