Matt Dwan
Assistant Coach
Matt Dwan is a long-standing and highly regarded assistant coach for the Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse program, serving in his current role since 2006 and entering his 17th season as of the 2023 campaign. He is primarily responsible for coordinating the defense—one of the more dominant units nationally under his watch—and overseeing transition play out of the defensive midfield. In the major 2012 championship year for Loyola, Dwan’s unit allowed just 7.51 goals per game, led the nation in turnover creation, and held opponents to a .241 shots-percentage.
A graduate of Loyola (class of 1995), Dwan enjoyed a standout playing career for the Greyhounds as a long-stick midfielder, earning multiple All-America honors and establishing himself in the program’s hall of fame. He also played professionally for the Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse from 2001-2003, contributing to three straight championship-game appearances and winning the 2002 title. In his coaching capacity, Dwan’s deep institutional knowledge, tactical insight on the defensive end, and experience as a former All-American make him a foundational piece of Loyola’s lacrosse leadership, supporting head coach Charley Toomey in recruitment, film breakdown, and player development across the program.
