Mark Machtolf has led the Gonzaga University baseball program since 2003, becoming one of the most accomplished coaches in program history. Entering the 2026 season, he is in his 23rd year as head coach and 36th overall with the program, reflecting a deep and longstanding commitment to Gonzaga baseball. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs have achieved sustained success in the West Coast Conference, including multiple regular-season titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A five-time WCC Coach of the Year, Machtolf has compiled more than 600 career wins, ranking among the winningest active coaches in the conference. His tenure has been marked by consistent competitiveness, highlighted by regional appearances and national rankings, including a program-best Top 10 ranking in 2022.
Beyond team success, Machtolf has developed a strong pipeline of talent, coaching numerous All-Americans, conference award winners, and professional players. More than 50 of his players have been selected in the MLB Draft, with several advancing to the major leagues. He has also emphasized player development across all areas, producing conference Players of the Year, Pitchers of the Year, and academic standouts. Prior to becoming head coach, Machtolf served as an assistant and associate head coach at Gonzaga, contributing to the program’s foundation. A former Stanford student-athlete and College World Series champion, he brings both elite playing experience and decades of coaching expertise, helping shape Gonzaga into a respected program both regionally and nationally.
