Mario Byrd
Defensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator
Mario “Rio” Byrd joined the Johns Hopkins football staff in 2023 as the Defensive Line Coach and on February 27, 2024, took on additional duties as the program’s Recruiting Coordinator. Byrd is a graduate of Christopher Newport University (CNU).
In his first season on staff (2023), Byrd’s defensive line helped anchor one of the most formidable units in the country. Under his coaching, Hopkins’ defensive front enabled the team to allow just 128.9 rushing yards per game and accumulate 39 sacks—tying for 23rd in the nation at 3.0 sacks per game. He also guided multiple players to postseason honors, including an All-American, an Academic All-American, three Academic All-District selections, and three All-Conference laurels.
Byrd’s impact continued into the 2024 season, during which Johns Hopkins went 12–2, won another Centennial Conference title, and reached the NCAA Semifinals. His defensive line helped power a defense that allowed just 13.6 points per game and held each of 10 opponents to 14 or fewer points during a 10-game win streak. Among his players that year were an All-Centennial Conference lineman recognized as Defensive Player of the Year and a D3football.com All-American, as well as a student recognized as an Academic All-American.
Before arriving at Hopkins, Byrd served as Defensive Line Coach at Alvernia University in 2022, and prior to that had held a role as Outside Linebackers Coach at his alma mater, CNU. Byrd’s playing career at Christopher Newport was marked by time as a starting defensive lineman (nose guard), including anchoring that position in 2018. Early in his coaching development, Byrd worked as a student assistant at CNU, and also coached the defensive line at Warwick High School in Virginia.
