Marci Byers
Virginia Tech — Head Coach, Women’s Volleyball
Marci Byers was appointed as the sixth head coach of the Virginia Tech volleyball program in January 2020, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience and a reputation for building competitive programs. In her first four seasons leading the Hokies, Byers guided the team to steady improvement, highlighted by a record-breaking 10–0 start in 2023 — the best in program history. That season also included Virginia Tech’s first win over Notre Dame since 2015 and key ACC victories over Wake Forest and Syracuse. Byers’ emphasis on player development has produced individual milestones such as 1,000 career assists for setter Hanna Borer and 1,000 career points for outside hitter Sydney Petersen, underscoring her commitment to both team and athlete growth.
Before her time in Blacksburg, Byers enjoyed an accomplished 11-year tenure as head coach at Radford University, where she became the winningest coach in program history. She led the Highlanders to three Big South regular season titles, two conference tournament championships, and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, earning Big South Coach of the Year honors four times. A Chicago native and 1995 graduate of Virginia Union University, Byers also served successful stints at Chowan University and within Virginia’s high school and club volleyball circuits. Known for her high-energy coaching style and ability to recruit top talent, she continues to elevate Virginia Tech volleyball within the ACC landscape.
