Lamar Butler has served as director of player development for George Mason men's basketball in Fairfax, Virginia, since April 2023. A former George Mason guard and 2006 graduate, he works with the Patriots' roster on on-court skill development and the day-to-day responsibilities of competing as an Atlantic 10 student-athlete.
Before returning to George Mason, Butler built his coaching background in the Washington area at both the high school and AAU levels. He joined Paul VI as an assistant coach in 2018 and was part of a program that won three straight VISAA state championships and the 2022 WCAC title. At Paul VI, he coached several highly regarded players, including Trevor Keels, Jeremy Roach, Deshawn-Harris Smith and Dug McDaniel. He also spent five seasons with DC Thunder and Team Takeover 16U, where he worked with future major college players such as Armando Bacot, Hunter Dickinson, Justin Moore, Casey Morsell and Anthony Cowan. Butler began his coaching career as an assistant at St. John's High School in Washington, D.C., from 2014-17, helping the Cadets win a WCAC championship.
