Kris Powell joined the Gonzaga University men’s tennis program as an assistant coach, bringing a strong track record of success from both head and assistant coaching roles. Prior to Gonzaga, Powell served as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Illinois Tech, where he elevated the program to national prominence. Under his leadership, the men’s team captured conference championships in 2022 and 2024 and earned NCAA Division III Tournament berths, advancing to the second round in both appearances. His success earned him three consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors, highlighting his impact in recruiting, player development, and program building.
Before becoming a head coach, Powell spent six seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Chicago, where he contributed to one of the top Division III programs in the country. During his tenure, the teams achieved multiple NCAA semifinal and quarterfinal appearances while producing numerous All-American athletes. Powell was recognized nationally with the ITA NCAA Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2018. A former Division I student-athlete at Prairie View A&M, he competed in conference championship teams and an NCAA Tournament. Known for his leadership and development-focused approach, Powell brings high-level experience and energy to Gonzaga’s coaching staff.
