Katie Dougherty is the head coach of the University of Maryland women's tennis program in College Park, Maryland. She joined the Maryland staff before the 2016-17 season, served three years as associate head coach, and was named the program's 10th head coach in July 2019. She was entering her sixth season as Maryland's head coach for the 2024-25 campaign.
Under Dougherty, Maryland has posted one of its strongest sustained stretches in recent years. The Terrapins went 18-7 in 2022, their best start in more than 30 years, then followed with a 17-9 finish in 2023 and a 16-10 record in 2024. Those 2022 and 2023 teams combined for 35 wins, a program record for a two-year span. In 2024, Maryland went 12-1 at home, earned five wins over top-75 opponents, recorded the program's first win over a top-30 team since 2013, finished in the ITA top 50 for the first time since 2011, and rose to No. 2 in the ITA Atlantic Regional Rankings. Maryland continued that momentum in 2025, finishing 15-12 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play, going 9-3 at home, defeating ranked Penn State and Iowa teams, and pushing top-seeded Michigan to the final point in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The win over Iowa marked the program's highest-ranked victory since 2013, and Maryland was ranked No. 53 in the ITA top 75 team rankings.
