Kane Wommack
Defensive Coordinator
Kane Wommack was hired as defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama in 2024, joining head coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff with a reputation as one of the nation’s rising defensive minds. In his first season in Tuscaloosa, Wommack engineered a unit that ranked among the nation’s elite, finishing 10th nationally in scoring defense at 17.4 points per game. The Crimson Tide limited opponents to just 4.7 yards per play and forced 28 turnovers, placing among the top teams in the country in takeaways. His defense featured multiple All-Americans and All-SEC selections, highlighted by standout performances from linebacker Jihaad Campbell and defensive back Malachi Moore. Wommack’s aggressive, turnover-focused philosophy quickly restored Alabama’s defense to national prominence.
Prior to Alabama, Wommack served three seasons as head coach at South Alabama, where he led the Jaguars to back-to-back bowl appearances and the program’s first-ever bowl victory in 2023. Earlier, he coordinated defenses at Indiana, earning recognition as a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2020 after guiding the Hoosiers to a top-15 national finish and one of the country’s top takeaway defenses. He also held defensive coordinator roles at South Alabama and Eastern Illinois. A former player at Arkansas and Southern Miss, Wommack graduated from Southern Miss in 2009. The Branson, Missouri, native and his spouse, Melissa, have three sons: Asher, Tatum, and Jones.
