Justin Anderson

Head Men's and Women's Swimming Coach

Justin Anderson, a 2010 graduate of the University of Mary Washington, enters his sixth year as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming programs. Since taking the helm, Anderson has continued UMW’s tradition of excellence in the pool and in the classroom. Under his leadership, the Eagles swept the Capital Athletic Conference Championships in 2019 and 2020, earning Anderson consecutive Coach of the Year honors. After a COVID-cancelled 2021 season, his teams have captured two straight Metropolitan Conference (METS) women’s titles, finishing in the top 25 nationally at the NCAA Championships each year. In the summer of 2021, Anderson was named to the Team USA coaching staff for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where he coached UMW alum Joey Peppersack and former assistant coach Zach Shattuck to finals appearances. Before returning to Fredericksburg, Anderson served as the head coach at Frostburg State University (2013–2018), transforming the program from a conference cellar-dweller into a competitive force that produced multiple CAC Swimmers of the Year, NCAA qualifiers, and record-breaking performances. Prior to Frostburg, he was an assistant coach at Trinity College (CT), where he led recruiting and helped both the men’s and women’s programs achieve new performance and academic benchmarks. As a student-athlete at UMW, Anderson was a team captain, 12-time conference champion, and three-time conference record holder. He earned 22 all-conference awards, three NCAA qualifying standards, and was twice named a Scholar All-American. In 2010, he was selected as the UMW and CAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
