Jon Maccoll
Head Coach
Jon Maccoll is the head coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights swimming and diving program and enters his ninth season leading the program after ascending to the role in December 2017. Since his arrival, Maccoll has guided Rutgers to its most successful era in Big Ten competition, establishing a championship-driven culture marked by steady improvement at the conference and national levels. Under his leadership, the Scarlet Knights have achieved their highest NCAA Championship finishes since 2006, recorded the program’s highest Big Ten point totals, and consistently advanced athletes to finals and podium finishes at the Big Ten Championships. Nearly all current school records have been set during his tenure, with Rutgers swimmers and divers regularly placing among the program’s all-time top performances.
Across his career, Maccoll has been responsible for 182 All-America swims from 32 student-athletes and has coached six Olympians, five of whom earned Olympic gold medals. Prior to Rutgers, he served as head coach at the University of Sioux Falls, where he launched the school’s first women’s swimming program, and as an assistant coach at UNLV and Queens University. At Queens, he helped build a national powerhouse that captured NCAA Division II national championships and produced multiple NCAA record holders. In addition to competitive success, Maccoll has emphasized academic excellence, with Rutgers earning 16 consecutive CSCAA Scholar All-American Team Awards and producing numerous Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and Academic All-Big Ten honorees. A graduate of Slippery Rock University with a degree in political science, Maccoll is widely respected for his ability to develop elite performers while fostering a balanced, high-achieving team culture.
