John Phillips
Head Coach
John C. Phillips was appointed the Head Men’s Golf Coach at the University of Maryland on July 5, 2022, bringing with him a strong track record in collegiate golf. In the 2024–25 season, he led the Terrapins to their first team title in more than a decade by winning the newly established Testudo Cup. Under his leadership, Maryland improved significantly in the Big Ten Championships, jumping from last place to 6th among 18 teams. Before coming to Maryland, Phillips served as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia for six seasons, where the Cavaliers made NCAA Championship appearances in each of his years there, and where he played a role in producing ACC individual champions. Earlier, he was on the staff at VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University), helping the program to multiple Atlantic 10 titles and mentoring student-athletes to conference honors. Phillips was a standout player at Bridgewater College, earning multiple all-conference honors and captaining the team before transitioning into coaching.
