John Melnick is the associate head coach for the University of Rhode Island women's track and field and cross country programs in Kingston, Rhode Island. He joined Rhode Island in 1992 and, by the 2018-19 academic year, was in his 28th season with the program.
Before arriving at Rhode Island, Melnick was a head coach at Cato-Meridian and Westhill High Schools and held assistant coaching positions at Miami (Ohio) and Ball State. At Rhode Island, he has coached multiple Atlantic 10 champions, NCAA qualifiers, and more than a dozen school record-holders. While at Miami, he worked with the sprints, hurdles, and throws, coaching a two-time NCAA All-American javelin thrower, a 1992 Olympic Trials qualifier, 69 All-MAC athletes, and 12 conference champions.
