John Danowski
Head Coach
John Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006, and has since built one of the sport’s defining dynasties. Across 17+ seasons in Durham, he has guided the Blue Devils to three NCAA championships (2010, 2013, 2014), nine ACC regular-season titles, four ACC tournament crowns, and 12 NCAA semifinal appearances. In 2019 he became the first Division I head coach to reach 400 career wins and has since moved to the top of the Division I men’s lacrosse wins list. His Duke teams have featured elite balance—top-five scoring offenses paired with rugged, disciplined defenses—and he has mentored 100 All-Americans and multiple Tewaaraton Award winners, including Matt Danowski (2007), Ned Crotty (2010), and Brennan O’Neill (2023).
Danowski’s leadership has extended to the international stage. Selected in 2016 to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team, he steered Team USA to world championship gold medals in 2018 and 2023, becoming the program’s first two-term head coach. Renowned for player development and culture, he emphasizes academics and lifelong learning; Duke has consistently ranked among the ACC’s best in academic honors during his tenure. Prior to Duke, Danowski spent 21 seasons at Hofstra, earning four conference Coach of the Year awards and developing numerous future professionals. A Rutgers graduate and record-setting Scarlet Knights attacker, he holds a master’s from LIU–C.W. Post. Danowski and his wife, Patricia, have two children—Kate and former Duke All-American Matt—and five grandchildren.
