Jason Schutz is an assistant coach for Duke track and field in Durham, North Carolina, where he works with the throws program after being hired in September 2025. He arrived at Duke with nearly two decades of coaching experience, along with a background as an All-American and Olympic Trials competitor. Before joining the Blue Devils, Schutz spent four years coaching the throws unit at Washington and had previously served an earlier stint with the Huskies as well. Across his two periods at Washington from 2016 to 2018 and 2021 to 2025, Schutz coached throwers who combined for 13 All-America honors, including six first-team selections, and five school records. Before returning to Washington for his second stint, he served as associate head coach at Northern Arizona from 2018 to 2021. Earlier, he coached at Cal State Northridge from 2012 to 2015, where his throwers played a major role in the program’s success. In his final season there, the Matador women won the Big West team title, and his throwers claimed three of the four individual women’s throws titles. Monique Griffiths swept the discus and hammer throw titles and later advanced to the NCAA Championships in the hammer.
In 2014, Cal State Northridge’s women scored 55 points in the throws at the Big West Championships, 20 more than the next-best throws group. During his first two seasons there, Schutz also coached Tucker Weathers to a pair of NCAA West Regional appearances in the shot put and guided Griffiths through a freshman season that included an NCAA Preliminary Round berth in the discus. Griffiths and teammate Jakayla Daniels also qualified for the USATF National Junior Championships. Schutz previously spent two seasons at Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2012, where he helped elevate the throws group and coached Jess Rocco to the NCAA West Regional and the USATF National Junior Championships in the javelin. Before that, he worked as a volunteer assistant at Colorado State, his alma mater, while also assisting the athletic department as a strength coach for track and field. As an athlete, Schutz was a three-time All-American, earning honors twice in the discus and once in the indoor weight throw, and he also competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw. He qualified for three straight USA Outdoor Championships in the discus from 2007 to 2009 and competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials, where he placed 16th. A native of Chromo, Colorado, Schutz also earned Academic All-America recognition at Colorado State and graduated with a degree in natural resource management and a minor in watershed science. He is married to former Washington distance runner Megan Morgan, and they have a daughter, Abigail.
