James Whitford has served as an assistant coach for the University of Rhode Island men's basketball program in Kingston, Rhode Island, since joining Archie Miller's staff in April 2024.
Whitford arrived at Rhode Island after leading Ball State as head coach from 2013 to 2022. He finished that tenure with 131 wins, the second-highest total in program history, and guided the Cardinals to consecutive 20-win seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17, the school's first back-to-back 20-win campaigns in more than 20 years. Ball State also won three MAC West Division titles under his direction.
