Jamaal Williams returned to the Portland State men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2025–26 season, bringing with him a blend of collegiate and high-level grassroots coaching experience. He previously served on head coach Jase Coburn’s inaugural staff during the 2021–22 season, helping guide the Vikings to a strong finish that included two wins in the Big Sky Conference Tournament and a semifinal appearance. After his initial stint at Portland State, Williams spent three seasons at UNLV, where he contributed to a successful run that included 58 wins and a National Invitation Tournament appearance. His return to PSU adds valuable continuity and experience to a program continuing to build momentum in the Big Sky.
Before entering the college ranks, Williams established himself as a highly respected coach in the Seattle basketball scene. He spent eight years coaching at powerhouse high schools Garfield and Nathan Hale, contributing to five state championships, including a 2017 national title at Nathan Hale. As an AAU coach with the Seattle Rotary Nike EYBL program, he developed elite talent and coached numerous Division I players and future NBA athletes. A former standout player at the University of Washington, Williams was part of teams that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twice and earned a No. 1 seed in 2005. His extensive playing and coaching background, combined with his passion for player development, make him a valuable asset to the Portland State program.
