Jacob James
Pitching Coach
Jacob James joined the University of North Alabama baseball staff as pitching coach after concluding a decorated five-year playing career with the Lions. A two-time team captain and five-year letterman, James graduated in 2024 following a record-setting senior season in which he earned All-ASUN Third Team honors. He capped his collegiate career as the program’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 284, including a Division I single-season record 105 strikeouts in 76.2 innings during the 2024 campaign. That season featured two 12-strikeout performances against UT Martin and Jacksonville, marking Division I single-game highs for the program. Over 67 career appearances, including 38 starts, James recorded 11 wins and established himself as one of the most accomplished pitchers in UNA’s Division I era.
Following his playing career, James signed with the Williamsport Crosscutters of the MLB Draft League before transitioning into coaching. He initially joined the Lions’ staff as Director of Pitching Development and was later promoted to pitching coach after the departure of David Mervis. A native of Loretto, Tennessee, James is a graduate of Loretto High School, where he won state championships in both baseball and basketball. Baseball runs deep in his family, as his father, Mike James, pitched for North Alabama in 1986–87. Known for his leadership and ability to connect with teammates, James now brings firsthand experience, competitive insight, and a strong understanding of the program’s culture to the Lions’ pitching staff.
