J.D. Byers
Virginia Tech — Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach (oversight of guard development)
J.D. Byers joined the Virginia Tech men’s basketball coaching staff in 2023 and enters his third season as an assistant coach in Blacksburg. At Virginia Tech, his primary role is the development of the program’s guards. Before arriving in Blacksburg, Byers had accumulated nearly two decades of assistant coaching experience across multiple institutions.
Before Virginia Tech, Byers served in assistant roles at Penn State (2023), VCU (2017–2023), Rice (2014–2017), Radford (2011–2014), Saint Francis (PA) (2010–2011), Randolph-Macon (2007–2010), and Lebanon Valley (2006–2007). During his time at VCU, he helped the Rams amass a 129–61 record over six seasons, including three NCAA Tournament berths and multiple Atlantic 10 titles. His recruiting efforts included securing top Atlantic 10 recruiting classes and mentoring future NBA draft picks such as Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland and Vince Williams Jr.
As a collegiate player, Byers was a decorated performer at Lebanon Valley. He earned NABC All-American honors and was named the CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year in 2005. He also received the Jostens Trophy (awarded to the top Division III student-athlete) and is one of five men’s basketball players whose jersey (#23) is retired by Lebanon Valley. Academically, he earned a B.S. in accounting and business administration from Lebanon Valley in 2005 and later completed an MBA at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2008.
On the personal side, Byers is married to Marci (née Jenkins), the head volleyball coach at Virginia Tech. The couple have two daughters, Kamryn and Skyyler.
