Hunter Hughes
Associate Head Football Coach
Hunter Hughes serves as the Associate Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator for Colorado Mesa University’s Mavericks football program, where he also oversees the linebackers. He was listed on the 2025 staff directory in that role under Head Coach Miles Kochevar.
Prior to arriving at Colorado Mesa, Hughes built a highly-acclaimed resume as a defensive coach. He spent a decade as Defensive Coordinator at Colorado State University–Pueblo (CSU Pueblo) where his defenses were among the top nationally in Division II and he led the 2014 squad to a shutout of then-No. 1 Minnesota State in the national championship game. He then coached at West Texas A&M University as head coach and also worked in the U.S. Football League and at the Division I level. In his current role at Colorado Mesa, Hughes brings his defensive acumen, program-building experience, and leadership as Associate Head Coach to support the Mavericks’ pursuit of conference and national success in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
