Gregory Edward Schiano is an American football coach and the current head coach of the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights football program, entering his 17th season leading the Scarlet Knights “On the Banks.” A native of Wyckoff, New Jersey, Schiano played linebacker at Bucknell University, graduating in 1988 with a degree in business administration before launching a long and influential coaching career. After early stops as a graduate assistant at Rutgers and Penn State and roles in the NFL and at the University of Miami, he ascended to the head coaching position at Rutgers in 2001, transforming a struggling program into a competitive force and bringing national prominence to Scarlet Knights football.
Schiano’s legacy at Rutgers is defined by consistency, growth, and a strong culture of development. He holds the record for most all-time wins in Rutgers history and has guided the team to numerous bowl games, including six bowl championships, and sustained academic success with team APR and GPA milestones. Following a successful first tenure from 2001 to 2011, Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020 and continued to build the program with back-to-back winning seasons, competitive performances in the Big Ten, and a notable pipeline of players reaching the NFL. His leadership emphasizes discipline, culture, and both on- and off-field excellence, playing a key role in elevating Rutgers football’s profile nationally.
