Grant Torgerson joined Portland State University as associate head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach in 2025, becoming one of head coach Chris Fisk’s first key hires. A native of Oregon City, Torgerson returned to his home state after spending the previous eight seasons working alongside Fisk at Central Washington. There, he developed into a highly regarded defensive coach, beginning as the defensive line coach in 2018 before earning a promotion to defensive coordinator in 2023. Under his leadership, Central Washington’s defense consistently ranked among the best at the NCAA Division II level, including a dominant 2024 season in which the unit led the nation in multiple defensive categories. His defenses also excelled in conference play, leading the Lone Star Conference in scoring and rushing defense in 2025.
Torgerson’s coaching success has been marked by strong player development and recognition, as he guided athletes to numerous all-conference honors and major awards, including multiple Defensive Player of the Year selections. Before transitioning fully into coaching, Torgerson was a standout student-athlete at Southern Oregon, where he was a four-year starting long snapper and part of a program that reached back-to-back NAIA National Championship games, winning the title in 2014. He later began his coaching career with the Raiders, quickly advancing to defensive line coach and contributing to one of the nation’s most productive defensive fronts. With a combination of playing experience, rapid coaching advancement, and a track record of defensive excellence, Torgerson brings energy and expertise to Portland State’s football program.
