Freddy Mesmer is the head coach of Georgetown men’s and women’s tennis in Washington, D.C. He was announced as head coach for the 2021-22 school year on Aug. 20, 2021, after serving on the Georgetown tennis staff since August 2019. A Maryland native, Mesmer moved into the top role after helping guide the program during his time as an assistant and bringing a strong family connection to Georgetown athletics. Before joining Georgetown, Mesmer built his playing career at Virginia Tech from 2015 to 2019. He competed in both singles and doubles and helped the Hokies reach the NCAA Tournament three times.
During his junior season, he was named team MVP after posting a 21-8 record in singles play. Mesmer graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism. His recent high-level college playing experience and time on Georgetown’s staff positioned him to take over the men’s and women’s programs. Mesmer also comes from a family with longstanding ties to Georgetown. His grandfather, Fred Mesmer, was part of the inaugural Georgetown University Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1953 and served as the men’s basketball head coach from 1931 to 1938 after competing in both basketball and tennis at Georgetown in the late 1920s. Several of Mesmer’s relatives also made their mark on Georgetown athletics, including cousins Sheehan Stanwick, Wick Stanwick, and Coco Stanwick in lacrosse, as well as his sister Anne Mesmer, who was a member of the tennis team during the 2010-11 season. That family history, combined with his own coaching and playing background, has made him a deeply connected figure within Georgetown athletics.
