David Smith
Assistant Tennis Coach
David Smith has served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado, since 2009. During his tenure, he has been an integral part of the Mavericks’ tennis staff, supporting team development, recruiting, and day-to-day training of student-athletes. Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Smith was a four-year letterwinner for the Mavericks from 2004-08, giving him a deep understanding of the program’s culture and competitive expectations. He also spent three seasons as the assistant tennis coach for the boys and girls teams at Central High School, bridging his early coaching experience with his later collegiate role.
Smith earned two bachelor’s degrees at Colorado Mesa — in Exercise Science and in K-12 Physical Education — equipping him with both an academic and practical foundation in athletic performance, training methodologies, and educational programming. His dual role in the men’s and women’s programs has allowed him to apply his background across a broader scope of athlete development and team operations. Known for his commitment to the holistic growth of athletes both on and off the court, Smith supports the Mavericks’ mission of competitive success while fostering academic and personal development.
